Meán Scoil win Tom Fitzgerald Cup after extra timeTom Fitzgerald Cup final – Kerry Colleges U-16 final
Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh, Castlegregory 4-16 (aet)
Killorglin Community College 3-12 (aet)
This was a pulsating encounter between two highly motivated and organised teams played in Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney. Killorglin certainly had the better of the early exchanges racing into a 4 point lead before midfielder Séamus O’Grady found space down the middle of the Killorglin defence before unleashing a bullet into the bottom corner to bring Meán Scoil back into the game. Méan Scoil were aided by a slight breeze in the first half and it wasn’t long before Kerry U-17 panelist Patrick O’Donoghue started to exert his dominance on proceedings scoring freely from both play and placed balls including one spectacular effort when he guided a sideline ball over the bar. Eoghan O’Toole, Conor O’Leary and Dara Butler also got impotant scores in a tight contest. The second half was a scrappy affair with both defences doing well. Méan Scoil’s use of the sweeper Fionn Cullinane certainly worked very well as he closed down space in front of Killorglins lively inside line. Lenny McGaley was again outstanding using his pace to cut out many Killorglin attacks. Méan Scoil then pushed on with fantastic goals from Adam Costello and Patrick O’Donoghue who finished with a personal tally of 1-11. However, Killorglin showed great battling skills to finish with 2 late goals themselves bringing the game to extra time. The strength in depth of the Meán Scoil panel was certainly the difference in the end as players got tired. Cian O’Grady, Eoghan Lyne and Jack Shannon came into the game a lot more helped by subs Alain Beaujouau, Stephen Smith Galvin and in particular Cian Cronin who scored a spectacular goal to end the game as a contest. The Méan Scoil team had heroes throughout the field from Eoin Kennedy in goal, David Costello and Fionn Cullinane in defence, midfielders Séamus Lyne and man of the match Patrick O’Donoghue to Adam Costello, Eoghan O’Toole and Cian Cronin in attack. Supporters gathered in the centre of Fitzgerald stadium for the presentation. Captain Patrick O’Donoghue thanked coaches Aodán Mac Gearailt and Jonathan Lyne as well as teachers and parents for their efforts and support throughout the year.
